LOS ANGELES, CA — Following widespread acclaim for comedian Deon Cole's 'mock prayer' targeting Nicki Minaj at this year's NAACP Image Awards, the organization has officially confirmed the addition of a new competitive category: 'Outstanding Achievement in Roasting Through Prayer.' The move is expected to revolutionize awards show humor, blending spiritual reverence with celebrity takedowns.
“We’ve always strived to honor excellence, and frankly, Deon’s ability to seamlessly transition from supplication to savage critique was nothing short of miraculous,” stated Dr. Evelyn Thorne, head of the newly formed 'Divine Disparagement' committee. “It truly spoke to the soul, and then immediately spoke to the alleged surgical enhancements of a prominent recording artist. That’s range.”
The new category will require nominees to deliver a prayer-like monologue that subtly (or not-so-subtly) critiques a public figure, institution, or societal ill, all while maintaining an air of profound spiritual reflection. Judges will evaluate performances based on comedic timing, theological plausibility, and the sheer audacity of the roast.
“We believe this will encourage a more… holistic form of accountability,” added Thorne. “Why just give a speech when you can ask the heavens to intervene in someone’s questionable life choices? It’s a win-win: spiritual upliftment for the audience, and potentially, a divine intervention for the target.” Early favorites for next year’s inaugural award include a televangelist known for his private jet collection and a tech CEO who recently announced he’d solved world hunger with an NFT.
