QUEENSLAND, AUSTRALIA – A consortium of fungus-farming ants has formally issued a cease-and-desist order to human scientists, demanding immediate recognition and royalties for their long-standing carbon capture and utilization methods. The ants, represented by a particularly aggressive scout, assert that their evolutionary strategy of converting atmospheric carbon dioxide into protective exoskeletal armor predates human innovation by millions of years.
“We’ve been doing this since before your ancestors figured out fire, let alone internal combustion engines,” stated a spokesperson for the Ant Collective, Dr. Formica Carbona, through a highly specialized entomological translator. “To see you lot suddenly ‘discover’ our proprietary process and then pat yourselves on the back for it is, frankly, insulting. We call it ‘armor,’ you call it ‘building materials’ – same difference, less pollution.”
Human researchers, who recently published findings on the ants’ remarkable ability to mineralize CO2 into calcium carbonate, expressed surprise at the ants’ legal acumen. Dr. Eleanor Vance, lead author of the study, noted, “We always knew they were industrious, but we didn’t anticipate them filing patents. This could significantly complicate our plans for a global carbon credit market.”
The ants are reportedly seeking a 15% cut of all future human carbon capture profits, or, failing that, an exclusive global license on all picnic leftovers.
